We all require clean water in our every day’s living. Our bodies require water on a constant basis for normal functioning and carrying out of metabolic processes. Water is useful in our bodies for maintenance of skin health, detoxification and provision of energy among other uses.

However, the water we use at home for cooking and drinking can be contaminated. Contaminated water poses health risks such as water borne diseases, e.g. typhoid, cholera and dysentery. It can also contain some other contaminants like sediment, chlorine, lead, fluorine etc. This therefore calls for some water purification and disinfection methods at home. Below are some of the most effective methods of water purification you can use.

Boiling Water

Boiling water is one of the easiest, cheapest and most effective means of water disinfection. It is a reliable method that can always be called upon in case of an outbreak or when you go to a place whose water condition you are not well informed about.

It involves putting water in a container and heating it till it reaches boiling point, usually 100 degrees Celsius or 212 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature can however vary slightly depending on the altitude. The water should be left to boil for around a minute.
However, boiled water does not have a great taste. To make the water regain its healthy taste, you can pour it in and out using another container. This will help the water become aerated and improve in taste.

Distillation

This method is similar to boiling. It however has another container that collects vaporized water. After water has reached its boiling point, it starts changing into vapour. This vapour is then directed, using a tube, to another container which has a cooling chamber. This allows the vapour to condense and turn back to its liquid state.
The distillate is usually highly purified and free from any type of contaminant. Distillation however eliminates all nutrients required by the body, and is therefore not recommended for daily consumption.

Chemical Water Disinfection

This type of domestic water disinfection commonly uses chlorine as the disinfectant. The chlorine is used in its liquid state since it’s very dangerous in its gaseous form. It is effective in killing microorganisms found in water, which may pose a threat to health. It however leaves an unpleasant smell and taste to your water. You can use a carbon filter to remove this odour.

Filtration

Filters are effective means of water purification. There are many types of home water filters. They can be under sink, counter top or whole house filters. The water filter you choose for your home usually depends on the type of water contamination of your water. You can find filters for sediment, excessive minerals, chlorine etc. When choosing a water filter, do so with a proper understanding of what you want to filter.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filter Systems

These systems make use of a combination of different water filters. They are the most effective filters available. They can filter any kind of contaminant that is found in your home water, ranging from sediment to disease causing microorganisms. The 5 stage reverse osmosis uses 5 stages of filtration to offer purification of the highest quality.

Conclusion

All these domestic methods of water purification and disinfection are effective. They however function differently and therefore it’s important to choose a method that meets all your needs, with consideration of the quality of water in your area. Contact us for more information.
